ILWU leadership is confident a new labor deal with the PMA will be reached
While the negotiations on a new contract between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) are set to begin in May, prior to the expiration of the existing deal on June 30, the ILWU’s top executive expressed optimism that a new deal will come to fruition.

As usual, California is leading the way to cleaner air around ports with a new program expected to generate $90 million in new fees from trucks entering and leaving California’s two largest ports. Effective April 8, the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles will start collecting a $10 per TEU ($20 for containers longer than 20 feet) fee on loaded import and export containers as they enter or leave container terminals.

This follows previous joint announcements by POLA and POLB, whom collectively account for roughly 40% of United States-bound import volumes, indicating that consideration of the fee would be pushed back each week going back to the week of November 22.

Total 2021 POLA volume—at 10,677,609 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units)—increased 1,464,213 TEU, or 15.89%, annually, topping 2020 by 13%, and setting a new annual record, too, topping the previous high set in 2018. POLB reported that calendar year 2021 volume—at 9,384,368 TEU—was up 15.7% annually, setting a new annual record, topping the previous record of more than 8.11 million TEU set in 2020.
