ATA reports mixed June tonnage levels

On an annual basis, June SA tonnage dipped 1.3%, marking the third straight annual SA decline, which, while down, marked an improvement over May’s 9.6% annual decline, which represented the largest annual decline going back to 2009 during the Great Recession of 2008-2009, with the caveat that SA tonnage is not falling at the same rate as it was during that period.

The ATA’s advanced seasonally-adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index for October, at 118.1 (2015=100), fell 0.3% off of September’s 118.5 reading, which was upwardly revised from an initial reading of 117.6. The ATA’s not seasonally-adjusted (NSA) index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by fleets before any seasonal adjustment and the metric ATA says fleets should benchmark their levels with, came in at 125.4 (2015=100), topping September by 8.4%.
April trucking tonnage is solid, reports American Trucking Associations

The ATA’s advanced seasonally-adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index for April, at 121.8 (2015=100) headed up 7.4% on the heels of a 2% decline in March, which came in at 113.4.
Compared to April 2018, SA tonnage saw a 7.7% annual gain, which represents its largest annual increase since July 2018.

The ATA’s advanced seasonally-adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index dipped 0.8% from August, which hit 112.7 (2015=100) to September, coming in at 111.8. This followed a 2% (which was raised following an originally reported 1.8%) decrease from July to August and a 1.9% increase from June to July. Compared to September 2017, SA tonnage headed up 2.9%, which was down from August’s 4.2% annual spread. Through the first nine months of 2018, SA tonnage is up 7% annually.

The ATA’s advanced seasonally-adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 0.7%, to 113.8 (2015=100), from April to May, following a 2.7% (upwardly revised from an original reading of 2.2%) March to April increase.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage at 149 (2000=100) was up 7.1% over July, and the ATA’s not seasonally-adjusted (NSA) index saw a 10.5% increase from July to August, coming in at 156.4.
