April’s TVI dry van freight reading—at 273—was off 10% compared to March, with the refrigerated TVI—at 190—and the flatbed TVI—at 229—down 10% and 6%, respectively, for the same period. Earlier this month, Frisco, Texas-based Transplace, a non-asset-based third-party logistics services provider and subsidiary of Uber Freight, rolled out a new addition to its Transplace Network Services offerings, with a new tech-enabled service—entitled OptiPro—that identifies cross-customer opportunities for both LTL (Less-than-Truckload) and partial truckload freight.

The new edition of the Cowen/AFS Freight Index, which was recently released by New York-based investment firm Cowen Inc. and Shreveport, La.-based 3PL and freight audit and payment company AFS Logistics LLC, highlighted how rising fuel prices are having a significant impact on both parcel and LTL (Less-than-Truckload) rates, whereas things are somewhat lessening on the truckload side.

Amid what one trucking analyst calls “an everything shortage,” shippers enter 2022 with heavy volumes of truck shipments bracing for continued higher ground freight rates. Those rates can run in the double-digit percentage increases—on top of 2021’s increases. Those increased freight rates tended to be upward of 10% for shippers whose freight did not match carriers’ needs in this sellers’ market.
