Maersk officials said that the purchase price is $1.68 billion (USD). They added that bringing Pilot into the fold will benefit shippers by offering customized international, domestic and cross-border logistics to Maersk’s North America landside logistics capabilities for business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) distribution models, as well as new supply chain capabilities for the big and bulky sector with white glove home delivery service.

LTL carriers are in command of a tight capacity market as the sector takes advantage of e-commerce, last-mile, and time-sensitive deliveries. Rate hikes can be expected, but savvy shippers can avoid the bulk of those increases through elimination of wasteful practices.

Maersk officials said that the purchase price is $1.68 billion (USD), adding that the acquisition is subject to regulatory review and approval, which it expects to be obtained by the second quarter, with both Maersk and Pilot operating as independent businesses until the acquisition is made official.

The new Pilot Franchise stations are based in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Oklahoma. The company said that these locations are all attractive assets because of their strong historical growth and operational performance.

Pilot officials said that this transaction, which it called a strategic purchase, was completed on March 31. And they added that it also expands Pilot Last Mile, its national final mile home delivery service offering, as well as set it up to be the nation’s second-largest last-mile delivery services provider for big and bulky goods.

In an effort to expand its last-mile delivery services, Lima, Penn.-based 3PL services provider Pilot Freight Services said this week it has acquired Manna Freight Systems, a Mendota Heights, Minn.-based provider of last-mile logistics services.
