Despite a strong second quarter, including a $410 million revenue increase, the USPS reported a $1.5 billion loss.

Shipping giant UPS struggled with shifting consumer demands and rising costs, resulting in an earnings dip during the first three months of 2024.

Quarterly consolidated revenue, at $21.7 billion, fell 5.3% annually, and adjusted earnings per share, at $1.43, saw a 35.0% annual decline. Consolidated quarterly operating profit came in at $1.6 billion, which was off 36.5% annually.

UPS said consolidated revenue fell 12.8% in Q3, but that it was winning back business lost during contract negotiations with the Teamsters.

In a supplemental update, the Teamsters said that it put UPS on notice during supplemental bargaining meetings throughout the country last week, refusing the “company’s outrageous insistence on cost-neutral agreements,” and adding that while some progress was made on various proposals by the union, the Teamsters also saw some disturbing backsliding by the company.

Global e-commerce powerhouse Amazon announced yesterday it is upping its plans to increase its package delivery and logistics services capabilities through the introduction of a new offering that, it said, will enable entrepreneurs to set up their own businesses to deliver Amazon packages.

While its top-line losses remain intact, with last week’s announcement that it had a $5.1 billion fiscal year 2015 net loss, there are some bright spots mixed in with last week’s fiscal year 2015 earnings announcement from the United States Postal Service (USPS).

Company points to U.S. Domestic and Supply Chain & Freight segments as drivers for quarterly growth.

The company said that Monday, December 12 is expected to be the busiest day in its almost 40-year history, pegging today’s shipment count to check in at around 17 million, which is about twice as much a typical day’s average volume.

When holiday shopping season picks up, December 12 and December 22 could shape up to be two of its busiest days.
