Josh Taylor, Senior Director of Professional Services, for San Diego-based Shipware, an audit and parcel consulting services company, told Newsroom Notes that in looking at the FedEx pilots situation, the main risk posed to FedEx by the potential for a pilots’ strike hasn’t been the threat of the pilots walking out, but the dissatisfaction of the pilots and the uncertainty it could have created with investors.

Quarterly revenue—at $22.9 billion—was off 6% annually, and adjusted earnings per share—at $2.20—fell 27.9%, for the same period. Consolidated quarterly operating profit came in at $2.5 billion, which was off 22.8% annually on an adjusted basis.

Fred Smith was an innovative entrepreneur when he founded FedEx in 1973, revolutionizing the industry and introducing a brand new concept. Technology was integral to his success from the start, and remains so to this day.

In a supplemental update, the Teamsters said that it put UPS on notice during supplemental bargaining meetings throughout the country last week, refusing the “company’s outrageous insistence on cost-neutral agreements,” and adding that while some progress was made on various proposals by the union, the Teamsters also saw some disturbing backsliding by the company.

FedEx described this consolidation as a phased transition that will subsequently bring nearly all of its operating companies—FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Services, as well as other FedEx operating companies—into Federal Express Corporation, and transition into what it called a single company operating a unified, fully integrated air-ground network. And it also noted that its less-than-truckload subsidiary, FedEx Freight, will remain as a standalone operation within Federal Express Corporation.  

Company officials said that these investments include the introduction of another 20 driving and delivery simulators throughout the United States, which almost doubles its number of simulators at its facilities.

As businesses of all sizes continue to scramble to find savings to offset the weight of these heavy annual increases, from FedEx and UPS, the major parcel carriers have again leveraged their duopoly of the industry and implemented widespread increases.

A key theme in Atlanta-based global freight transportation and express delivery and logistics services provider UPS’s fourth quarter earnings call yesterday centered around its contract with the Teamsters, which is set to expire on July 31. On the earnings call, UPS CEO Carol Tomé made it clear where UPS is coming from, in. advance of its negotiations with the Teamsters, noting that the Teamsters have very important to the company for the better part of the last 100 years.

Quarterly revenue—at $27.0 billion—was down 2.7% annually, and adjusted earnings per share—at $3.62—up 0.8% annually, topping Wall Street expectations of $3.59 per share. Quarterly operating profit came in at $3.2 billion, which was off 17.9% annually.

After stating in July that it was preparing to cut down on its Sunday delivery services in remote and rural areas of the United States, from 95% to 80% of the U.S. population, Memphis-based global freight transportation and logistics services provider FedEx is now reducing its Sunday delivery footprint to around 50% of the country, according to various reports.

In a recent customer notice, Atlanta-based global freight transportation and logistics services provider UPS stated it will be extending its demand-based surcharges past peak season. UPS said that the demand surcharge will extend to packages that require Additional Handling and Large Packages for all U.S. domestic, U.S. import, and U.S. export shipments for qualifying customers. Logistics Management Group News Editor Jeff Berman recently caught up with Wes Wheeler, President of UPS Healthcare, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based global freight transportation and logistics services provider UPS. Wheeler provided insights on various aspects of the segments UPS Healthcare serces, including: the impact of the pandemic on the cold chain and refrigerated (reefer) logistics; lessons learned from the pandemic; and the impact of global trade on the cold chain and global supply chains, among others. The firm said that average tally of parcels delivered per day came in at around 85 million, with OTP ranges for the three largest carriers—FedEx, UPS, and the United States Postal Service (USPS)—in similar territory, at 96.3%, 97.0%, and 96.2%, respectively.

This acquisition adds significant scale to the company’s UPS Healthcare unit, with temperature-controlled facilities in 14 countries, as well as 3,000 new employees throughout Europe and Latin America.
