ISM non-manufacturing data is flat but up for the 20th consecutive month

The ISM’s index for measuring the sector’s overall health—known as the NMI—was 52.7 in July, a 0.6 percent decline from June. A reading above 50 represents growth. And even with the sequential decline in the NMI the report showed growth in the non-manufacturing sector for the 20th consecutive month.

Port Tracker is calling for first half 2011 volumes to be up 7.2 percent, just ahead of last month’s 7.1 percent projection. This would be 5 percent better than the first half of 2010. In 2010, the report said there was a total of 14.7 million TEU moved—a 16 percent gain over 2009, which was largely achieved due to 2009’s 12.7 million TEU serving as the lowest annual tally since 2003.

April retail sales, which include non-general merchandise like automobiles, gasoline, and restaurants, were $389.4 billion for a 0.5 percent increase from March and a 7.6 percent increase compared to April 2010, according to Commerce data. Commerce said that total retail sales from February through April were up 8.1 percent annually.
