Kuehne + Nagel say it’s using blockchain to ease sharing of weight data for ocean shipping containers, the Swiss freight forwarding giant says “blockchain technology” has been applied to its verified gross mass (VGM) portal.

In an increasingly interconnected world, where trade is a core component of economic activity, creating a more seamless global supply chain is now vital, however, a new generation of tech-savvy freight forwarders may be creating just the right amount of disruption the industry needs to improve synchronization.

Freight forwarding is one of the most profitable industries in the world, and its top performers are almost as profitable as Apple, with experience and stable, productive business systems being key differentiators, say analysts.

The acquisition builds on Kuehne + Nagel’s overland strategy and will significantly strengthen the company’s position as an end-to-end logistics provider in North America.

While the first half of 2013 showed some signs of cautious optimism, the Euro crisis is still hampering the European logistics and transportation landscape. However, measures are currently underway to stabilize the region—including plans for a closer partnership with the U.S.
