Q&A: Erin Van Zeeland, Schneider National Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) and Senior Vice President and General Manager of Logistics
Logistics Management Group News Editor Jeff Berman recently caught up with Erin Van Zeeland, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) and Senior Vice President and General Manager of Logistics, for Green Bay, Wisc.-based truckload, intermodal and logistics services provider Schneider National. Van Zeeland addressed various topics, including: Peak Season, intermodal, logistics technology, and near shoring among others.

U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes are up, for week ending September 16, reports AAR
Rail carloads, at 232,723, eked out a 0.2% annual gain. Intermodal containers and trailers, at 257,067 units, were up 3.3% annually.

August intermodal volumes see another month of declines, reports IANA
Total August volume, at 1,463,123 units, decreased 7.5% annually, faring better than the 9.8% annual decrease seen in July.

And they added that this service will connect CN-served Canadian markets with Norfolk Southern-served Kansas City and Atlanta, which they referred to as the heart of the fast-growing manufacturing and consumer base in the Southeastern U.S.

Rail carloads, at 222,199, were off 1% annually, trailing the weeks ending July 29 and July 22, at 230,511, and 222,454, respectively, and intermodal containers and trailers, at 249,739 units, were off 5.2%.

Taking a quick look at some year-to-date market trends and themes
While the calendar indicates that just about the first seven months of 2023 are officially in the books, this seems like as good of a time as any to take a quick look back at things on a year-to-date basis, as they relate to key supply chain, logistics, and freight transportation trends and themes.

U.S. rail carload and intermodal units are down, for week ending July 22, reports AAR
Rail carloads, at 222,454, were off 1.3% annually, and intermodal containers and trailers, at 252,282 units, were down 4.8%.

U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes see annual declines, for week ending July 8, reports AAR
Rail carloads, at 197,086, saw a 2.3% annual decline, andintermodal containers and trailers—at 210,757 units—were down 7.6% annually.

2023 State of Logistics: Rail/Intermodal
Rail/Intermodal volumes remain uneven as service improvements continue to take hold.

U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes see annual declines in June, reports AAR
Rail carloads, at 903,397, fell 0.2%, or 1,931 carloads—compared to June 2022. Intermodal containers and trailers, at 988,766 units,were down 3.6%, or 76,237 units, for the same period.
