February shipments, at 1.173, headed up 4.0% compared to January’s 1.128 and were down 2.1% annually ad up 4% compared to January, and February expenditures, at 2.874, saw a 5.5% annual gain and a 2.9% increase over January.

Truckload rates, which measure linehaul rates, saw a 5% increase to 138.4 (January 2005=100), rising for the 17th consecutive month, and coming in slightly shy of the December 2018 all-time record. And intermodal rates were down 3% compared to January and up 6.2% annually, marking the 29th consecutive month of annual gains.

January shipments, at 1.128, slipped 0.3% annually and 1.2% compared to December and expenditures, at 2.792, were up 7.8% annually and down 4% compared to December.

November shipments, at 1.162, eked out a modest 0.6% annual gain and were down 5.1% annually, and November expenditures, at 2.849, saw an 8.4% annual increase, for its 23rd straight annual gain, and were down 2.4% compared to October.

October shipments, at 1.224, were up 6.2% annually and down 1.4% compared to September, and October expenditures, at 2.919, were up 12% compared to October 2017 and down 2.4% compared to September.

September shipments, at 1.241, were up 1.1% compared to August and up 8.2% annually, and expenditures headed up 2.5% compared to August and were up 19.3% annually.

August freight shipments, at 1.227, rose 6% annually and were off 1.4% compared to July, and August freight expenditures, at 2.917, increased 16.7% annually and were up 0.6% compared to July.

Through July, the most recent month for which data is available, freight shipments and expenditures have now seen annual gains for 19 and 22 months, respectively, the report said.

The most recent edition of the Cass Freight Index Report from Cass Information Systems continued to point to a very strong freight economy, with both freight shipments and expenditures finished the first half of 2018 in strong fashion.
