BTS reports a solid performance for Freight Transportation Services Index
October’s Freight TSI reading, at 138.6, is the fourth highest on record and is 1% below the all-time high of 140.0 set in August 2019 and represents the highest monthly increase since September 2018.

Coming off of an all-time high in August, the Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported this week that its Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) fell 2.5% in September.

BTS reports Freight TSI sets a new record
The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported this week that its Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) headed up 1.4% from July to August, the most recent month for which data is available, setting a new all-time high for the second consecutive month.

July’s Freight TSI reading, at 139.0, followed two months of declines-with May and June down 0.1% and 0.3%, respectively- on the way to setting a new record reading, topping the previous high of 138.7 recorded in November 2018.

May’s Freight reading, at 135.4, marks the second straight month of declines, falling 0.7% from April and 0.2% annually, with the latter well off an 8.6% annual gain from May 2017 to May 2018.

January’s Freight TSI reading at 132.3 marks its second highest level ever recorded, with December 2017’s 132.8 (upwardly revised from an initial reading of 132.0) being the highest.

U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico sees annual gain in 2016, BTS reports
BTS said all five major transportation modes– truck, rail, pipeline, vessel and air –moved more U.S. freight with Canada and Mexico by value in 2017 compared to 2016. And it added that total value of cross-border freight carried on all modes rose 6.6 percent from 2016 to $1.2 trillion in current dollars.

BTS reports U.S-NAFTA trade is up annually in December
United States trade with its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico, saw annual growth in December, the most recent month for which data is available, marking the 14th consecutive month of gains. Total value came in at $93.5 million, with all five modes of freight transportation moving more freight by value, and marked a 7.4% annual increase.

The United States Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported this week that United States trade with its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico, was up annually in November, the most recent month for which data is available. With a 10.5% annual gain, November represents the 13th consecutive month of increases.

With a 0.2% increase from October to November, the Freight TSI hit 130.8, which, BTS said, is a new all-time high.

BTS reports another all-time high for Freight Transportation Services Index
For September, the most recent month for which data is available, the Freight TSI topped August by 0.2% at 129.2. August’s 129 (downwardly revised from 130.7) was the previous all-time high. And July’s 128.8 was the previous all-time high before August.

BTS reports August U.S.-NAFTA freight flows are up for 10th straight month
With a 4.6% annual gain to $97.4 million in August, this marks the 10th consecutive month of increases, with all five major transportation modes carrying more freight by value.
