CN announces plan to acquire new freight cars and containers

Earlier this month, Class I railroad carrier CN rolled out plans to increase its assets by acquiring more than 2,200 new freight cars this year and 1,300 new containers. Company officials said the impetus for this is to support traffic growth and improve service.

In a recent filing with the Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Board (STB), a group comprised of several rail shippers voiced their opinions as to why allowing BNSF Railway to take a write-up of roughly $8 billion based on the acquisition premium paid by Berkshire Hathaway in its February 2010 $34.5 billion acquisition of BNSF is “objectionable for many reasons.”

Container shipping carrier APL recently said it has made a land purchase in Joliet, Illinois to develop an intermodal container terminal. APL officials said the company purchased 43 acres of space from CenterPoint Properties within the CenterPoint Intermodal Center, the largest inland port in the United States.
