SEKO Logistics has launched a new Airfreight+ Final Mile service in North America to give retailers, marketplace merchants and consumer brands a home delivery solution for bigger, bulkier products that delivers air cargo to their door at the speed of ecommerce.

This new flight, which UPS said is operating on a weekly basis, will start flying daily on February 27 and be in service Tuesday through Saturday. And UPS said the flight will be operated with one of the company’s new 747-8F freighters, adding that the flight is a facet of the company’s build out of its smart global logistics network, which moves 3% of global GDP per day and is concurrent with its role as the official logistics provider...

The International Air Transport Association recently released full-year 2017 data for global air freight markets showing that global demand grew by 9.0%. This was more than double the 3.6% annual growth recorded in 2016.

The new partnership augurs great things for an already robust air cargo industry

As the outlook for the global air cargo industry continues to brighten, another significant developed this week when the Airforwarders Association (AfA) announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA).

October’s Freight TSI reading of 129.2 marks a new all-time high, topping August 2017’s 129 by 0.2%, as well as the third all-time high set over the last four recorded months and the fourth in the last six recorded months.

While the nation’s air cargo industry remains strong, several indicators suggest that demand may have passed the growth peak.

Full service 3PL and non asset-based 3PL services provider Pilot Freight Services said late last month that it has rolled out a new service that will transport ground cargo across the United Stated border into Mexico in a cost-effective manner.

DCLI Chassis Link, a Charlotte, NC-based provider of marine chassis and asset management services to the U.S. intermodal industry, said it has inked a definitive agreement to acquire TRAC Intermodal’s fleet of roughly 72,000 53-foot domestic chassis and related customer and hosting contracts with major Class I railroads and intermodal shipping companies throughout the United States.

DHL officials said that this 54,000 square-foot gateway will expand the company’s presence in Chicago, adding that the new state-of-the-art northeast cargo campus at O’Hare International is poised to become the largest cargo development constructed at a U.S. airport in more than a decade upon its completion in the coming years.

Third quarter earnings results issued today by Atlanta-based UPS were solid despite challenges posed during the quarter as a result of multiple hurricanes and other natural disasters. Revenue for the quarter was up 7% annually to $15.798 billion, with earnings per share up 1 cent to $1.45, meeting Wall Street expectations. Operating profit, at $2.035 billion, was up slightly over last year’s $2.034 billion.

With a 1-cent increase, the national average for diesel now stands at $2.797 per gallon. This follows a 1.1-cent gain last week and a 0.4-cent increase the week before.

While transpacific oceanborne traffic was especially robust this past peak season, industry analysts were also impressed by the air cargo surge in the region. If this trend is to continue, however, the need for improved airport infrastructure is obvious.

While the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) electronic logging device mandate deadline remains intact for December 18, it comes with a caveat based on an announcement issued by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance earlier this week.
