Port of Oakland is feeling the impact of AB5-related protests
The ongoing trucker protests in recent days over the implementation of AB5 are taking a toll on operations at the Port of Oakland. The protests are in response to the United States Supreme Court’s having denied review—or Certiorari—of the Circuit’s reversal against the injunction of AB5 (Assembly Bill 5) in California, a law governing owner-operators that potentially could be very disruptive to trucking operations in the nation’s most populous state.

Armstrong data points to record-breaking 2021 3PL revenues
The trio of strong consumer demand, ongoing supply chain bottlenecks, and tight carrier capacity worked in tandem to drive air, ground, and ocean transportation rates to all-time highs in 2021, with shippers turning to third-party logistics (3PL) services providers on various fronts, including inventory replenishment and avoiding stock outs, according to a new report recently issued by Milwaukee-based supply chain consultancy Armstrong & Associates.

Biden issues Executive Order focused on resolving rail carrier and labor differences
In an effort to quell further supply chain disruptions, President Joe Biden signed an Executive Order (EO) late last week to establish a Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) focused on resolving a labor dispute between Class I rail carriers and 12 U.S.-based rail labor unions on reaching labor accord. The establishment of the PEB went into effect on July 18.

J.B. Hunt introduces new transload service in Southern California
Company officials said that this facility, which it said is strategically located, will support the Los Angeles and Long Beach area, with various services, including port drayage and transloading, coupled with “quick access” to both outbound rail and highway transport, and also work in tandem with its recently rolled out plan to help shippers expedite overseas freight delivery in a long-term multi-vessel service agreement.

The national average—at $5.568—fell 10.7 cents below the week of July 4, which came in at $5.675. And that decline was in line with a 10.8-cent decline, from the week of June 27, which was at $5.783. The decline from the week of June 20—at $5.81—to the week of June 27, was less significant, down 2.7 cents.
