Session 5: E-commerce

Hyper-local fulfillment takes flight

One area that is nearly certain to soar post-pandemic is micro-fulfillment, or “hyper-local” fulfillment. This emerging concept relies on a network of small fulfillment centers located very close to consumers – or inside existing retail locations – that can profitably complete same-day orders. The concept was a response to growing e-commerce fulfillment and shrinking brick-and-mortar sales and was gaining momentum well before the pandemic.

In this session, we explain the fundamental groundwork necessary to ensure that the operation develops the proper, profitable and sustainable hyper-local network—from developing internal network design capabilities, investing in the necessary technology and systems, and growing internal competencies around these hyper-local systems to maintain success.

Attendees to this session will come away better understanding:

  • The fundamentals of hyper-local fulfillment.
  • How to establish the appropriate network, technologies and systems necessary.
  • Steps for building out an efficient and scalable hyper-local network.
