Key Operational Evaluation Points for a Smooth SAP EWM or WM Deployment

When the decision has been made to deploy either SAP Supply Chain Execution (SCE) Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) or SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Warehouse Management (WM) in your conventional and/or automated warehouses, the success (or failure) of that implementation can rest solely on the amount of advance preparation time spent.

Not only is it important to carefully evaluate potential integration providers, it’s also critical to thoroughly analyze a variety of internal factors to ensure the smoothest—and fastest—implementation possible.

Operational evaluation steps include:

  • Develop and communicate the business case benefits of the project throughout your organization during the planning, integration and deployment phases.

  • Prioritize your team’s list of business, functional and technical requirements.

  • Document all current data sources.

  • Document any software customization throughout your existing operation, including warehouse management systems (WMS), warehouse control systems (WCS) and automation.

  • Map future state processes.

  • Identify both business and operational key performance indicators (KPIs) for both current and future operations.

  • Document current automated processes (if they exist) and map them to planned automated systems.

  • Document current transaction volumes per facility and process area, and plan for future growth.

  • If new automated equipment is planned for installation now (or in the future), account for those investments.

  • Anticipate the need for extensive change management communications, not just internally, but also with suppliers and customers.
