With the meteoric rise of e-commerce around the globe, innovative capabilities for last-mile delivery, fulfillment services, warehousing and reverse logistics are now critical for survival. However, investing in new capabilities is daunting and increasingly harder for logistics and supply chain operation to justify—which makes finding the right third-party logistics (3PL) provider to meet your specific needs more essential than ever.
Over the past few years, the 3PL market has become increasingly crowded and fragmented with a mix of global and local providers, as well as new players emerging with more user-friendly services and digital platforms. According to our presenter, a key priority for 3PLs will be to up their game, and for shippers to evaluate 3PLs to ensure that they’re getting the most from these relationships as the recovery unfolds.
Historically, shippers have relied on 3PLs to cost-effectively manage asset-based activities such as transportation and warehousing; however, those relationships have expanded over the past few years, as 3PLs now offer critical, real-time visibility and reporting. Getting it right requires new ways of partnering and innovating with 3PLs. However, 3PLs will need a continued focus on their service expansion to meet customer needs. Getting it right now requires new thinking from shippers and 3PLs to successfully partner and innovate.
