United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending December 16, were up, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 234,449, increased 6.5% annually, topping the week ending December 9, at 229,424, and trailing the week ending December 2, at 237,049.
AAR reported that all of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks posted annual gains, including: coal, up 3,873 carloads, to 65,450; grain, up 2,599 carloads, to 24,275; and chemicals, up 2,337 carloads, to 32,483.
Intermodal container and trailer volumes, at 268,134 units, rose 8.6% annually, trailing the week ending December 9, at 269,670 units, and the week ending December 2, at 272,577.
Through the first 50 weeks of 2023, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 11,288,867 are up 0.3% annually, and intermodal units, at 12,222,775, are down 5.5% annually.
