United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending December 9, were mixed, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 229,424, decreased 2.5% annually, trailing the week ending December 2, at 237,049, and topping the week ending November 25, at 195,948.
AAR reported that five of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks posted annual gains, including: motor vehicles and parts, up 2,430 carloads, to 17,486; chemicals, up 1,850 carloads, to 30,948; and metallic ores and metals, up 1,189 carloads, to 20,622. Commodity groups posting annual decreases included: coal, down 5,641 carloads, to 66,911; nonmetallic minerals, down 3,165 carloads, to 28,980; and grain, down 1,834 carloads, to 20,701.
Intermodal container and trailer volumes, at 269,670 units, were up 5.5% annually, trailing the week ending December 2, at 272,577, and topping the week ending November 25, at 218,384.
Through the first 49 weeks of 2023, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 11,054,418, are up 0.1% annually, and intermodal units, at 11,954,641, are down 5.8% annually.
