United States rail carload and intermodal volumes for the week ending February 23 were mixed, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 256,954, rose 2% annually, topping the week ending February 16 at 250,236 and the week ending February 9 at 242,266.
AAR reported that seven of the ten carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: petroleum and petroleum products, up 2,135 carloads, to 12,188; miscellaneous carloads, up 1,874 carloads, to 9,749; and grain, up 1,636 carloads, to 21,695. Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2018 were motor vehicles and parts, down 819 carloads, to 16,705; farm products excl. grain, and food, down 704 carloads, to 15,792; and chemicals, down 613 carloads, to 30,982.
Intermodal containers and trailers, at 265,676, slipped 3.9% annually, trailing the week ending February 16 at 273,679 units and topping the week ending February 9 at 277,513.
Through the first eight weeks of 2019, U.S. carloads were up 0.4% annually to 1,987,943 and intermodal units, at 2,133,036, were down 0.1%.
