The Road to Zero Emissions Now

With tightening emissions regulations on their way, fleets have an affordable and proven alternative for zero emissions today.

The transportation and logistics industry is essential to the quality lifestyle Americans enjoy. But it is also the largest user of dirty diesel in the nation, producing over 50 percent of the nitrogen oxide emissions in the United States. Trucking alone produces over 25 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions, and studies show that air pollution from diesel causes cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses and disease.

In response to the environmental and public health threat, cities around the world are banning diesel for clean alternatives. Fleets of the future will likely be comprised of zero emissions technologies as they become available. But the first electric heavy-duty trucks won’t be available for years, and there are big questions on cost, lack of charging super stations, and duration of travel time.

ZERO NOW for the Long Haul

Logistics professionals will be interested to know there is already an affordable solution that can power heavy duty trucks and meet our clean air goals—Clean Energy’s ZERO NOW, a fueling solution that meets zero emissions standards. This solution combines Cummin’s Westport’s Near Zero natural gas engines B6.7N, L9N, and ISX12N models with Clean Energy’s Redeem™ renewable natural gas (RNG), for medium and heavy-duty trucking.

The new CWI natural gas engine achieves the lowest emissions levels in North America, yet delivers diesel caliber performance with reliability and durability, making it the cleanest certified heavy-duty engine in the world.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) certified these engines in December 2017 at CARB’s optional Low NOx standard of 0.02 g/bhp-hr, 90% lower emissions than the current EPA NOx standard. In fact, the new engines were tested at 0.01 g/bhp-hr, achieving virtually zero tailpipe emissions.

Clean Energy’s Redeem is made entirely from organic waste and is up to 70% cleaner than diesel, making it the cleanest fuel available in North America.

“By pairing the cleanest fuel available with the cleanest engine technology, ZERO NOW provides heavy duty truck fleets with a true zero-emissions solution that can be easily and economically adopted by logistics fleets today,” said Greg Roche, Clean Energy’s vice president of sustainable trucking.

Redeem Dollar Deal Lowers Fuel Costs

Currently, one of the biggest concerns in the logistics industry is rising fuel costs. With higher fuel prices come increased transportation costs, which in turn pushes up fuel surcharges. As diesel fuel prices rise, this causes the surchargesadded to freight rates to escalate.

In response to this trend, Clean Energy has launched the Redeem Dollar Deal promotion to help logistics fleets adopt the environmental benefits of its ZERO NOW solution while receiving a significant cost-saving discount when purchasing RNG in California. Heavy duty trucks that are powered by the new ultra clean Cummins Westport (CWI) ISX12N engine purchased this year will be eligible for Clean Energy’s Redeem renewable natural gas at its California stations for the low price of $1 per gallon for an entire year.

“At a time when the price of dirty diesel is bumping up to $3.75 a gallon in California, paying only $1 a gallon for a year for Redeem can go a long way to recouping the cost of a new truck. Add in the grants available in California for new clean trucks, the ZERO NOW special offer makes it advantageous for logistics fleets to switch to clean, renewable natural gas,” said Roche.

The offer is available on a first come, first served basis to the first 250 qualifying trucks. These trucks can fuel with Redeem RNG at Clean Energy’s extensive network of 23 stations throughout California. Also, Clean Energy has dedicated professionals that will help customers navigate through the application process for grants.

Available and Ready to Roll

Clean Energy’s ZERO NOW solution offers unprecedented environmental impact that entirely replaces petroleum fuel and thus the 100 percent elimination of diesel particulate matters. Offering far quieter operation, it results in 70 percent to over 100 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

And unlike electric engines, ZERO NOW is available today and meets long range needs of over 1,000 miles, offering route flexibility and in-route efficiency, with fuels available at an existing nationwide network of RNG fueling stations.

“From an economic perspective, ZERO NOW can offer transportation and logistics companies unparalleled savings, by presenting the lowest incremental vehicle cost to diesel, and costing up to 100 percent less than electric,” said Roche. “Additionally, RNG is a price-stable fuel that is in abundant domestic supply.”
