Ryder opens up El Paso-based multi-client facility logistics facility

Following a February announcement, in which it opened up a new multi-client warehouse in Laredo, Texas, and expanded its Nuevo Laredo, Mexico-based drayage yard, Miami-based freight transportation and logistics services provider Ryder System continues to remain active on the cross-border trade front between U.S. Mexico.

The company said earlier this week it opened up a second multiclient facility logistics facility located in El Paso, Texas, which is in close proximity to the Ysleta Port of Entry, which it said is the largest commercial port in the El Paso district, as well as a critical trade corridor for northbound goods out of Juarez, Mexico.

As the company explained when it opened up its Laredo facility in February, a key driver for this new facility is related to U.S. trade with Mexico now at roughly $800 billion, with the Port of Ysleta processing around 9%-to-10% of that tally, with only the Port of Laredo, Texas—which processes nearly 40% of goods crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, according to Frank Bateman, vice president of supply chain operations for Ryder, in a statement.

The new 50,000 square-foot El Paso facility provides various services for shippers, including cross-dock (consolidation and de-consolidation, ambient storage for imports and exports, 24/ yard operations, and various value-added services, according to Ryder. What’s more, it added that the new facility is within less than five minutes from the U.S.-Mexico border and less than 15 miles from the airport, with what it called easy interstate access in all directions.

In an interview with LM, Bateman said that a key factor in opening this new facility was that Ryder was looking to consolidate operations from multiple sites into a new larger site, as well as increase its presence in this market, adding it had been planned for nearly two years.

“It’s a multiclient site, so we can leverage management and space as needed,” he said. “It includes warehouse/crossdocking as well as a very large trailer drop lot and driver domicile. There are multiple customers serviced at this site, including automotive, industrial, high-tech, and consumer packaged goods.

As for staffing at the new facility, Bateman said it is comprised of a mix of management, warehouse employees, U.S. drivers and Mexican drivers that will be picking up and delivering for import or export.
