Dock Equipment: Insulated dock door keeps weather and service calls at bay

Impactable doors put a big dent in maintenance and energy costs for produce distributor.

The Anthony Marano Co., located in the Chicago metropolitan area, operates a 420,000-square-foot full line produce distributor serving the entire Midwest. Noting that dock doors sometimes hung open to the outside temperatures after an impact, the company replaced them with fully impactable doors that have reduced costs and disruptions.

Moving 300 to 350 trailer loads of fresh produce weekly, the facility includes 77 dock doors, or 77 opportunities for energy to escape and the elements to interfere with distribution inside the building. Ryan O’Brochta, development manager at Anthony Marano Co., explains that prior to installing the new doors, they were making continuous and costly maintenance calls. Scheduling service became a greater inconvenience as increased volume led to more traffic, impacts, temperature changes and compromised product.

The standard sectional overhead doors were replaced with fully impactable doors with a patented track, panel, plunger and weather seal design to increase energy efficiency and reduce the total cost of ownership. The new doors help the dock avoid temperature fluctuations that can lead to product spoilage and increased energy bills.

Designed to resist moderate to severe damage, the doors’ panels are insulated with a foam core and polycarbonate interior. In addition, the tracks keep the backbone of each door operational even after an impact, preventing repairs or replacements. “Finally we have doors that work for us,” O’Brochta says. “We don’t have to suffer the pain of constant door maintenance, and that is priceless.”
