AAR reports annual U.S. rail carload and intermodal gains for the week ending August 12

Carloads rose 0.3% to 268,364, and intermodal containers and units were up 5.1% annually to 280,426.


The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported this week that United States rail carload and intermodal volumes saw annual gains for the week ending August 12.

Carloads rose 0.3% to 268,364, which trailed the week ending August 5 at 273,199. And four of the ten carload commodity groups tracked by the AAR saw annual gains, including: coal, up 5,689 carloads, to 94,593; nonmetallic minerals, up 3,779 carloads, to 40,794; and chemicals, up 1,169 carloads, to 31,621. Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2016 included grain, down 6,161 carloads, to 19,080; petroleum and petroleum products, down 1,807 carloads, to 8,692; and motor vehicles and parts, down 1,277 carloads, to 16,166.

Intermodal containers and trailers were up 5.1% annually to 280,426, which was below the week ending August 5 at 281,623.

Through the first 32 weeks of 2017, U.S. carloads are up 5.1% at 8,260,255 and intermodal containers and units are up 3.2% at 8,513,076.
