Truckload carrier Schneider National and Class I railroad carrier CSX said yesterday they have reached a new multiyear agreement in which CSX will continue to be one of Schneider’s main rail providers, continuing to position Schneider’s ability to serve the Eastern United States for intermodal services.

Company officials said that this investment will help Schneider to deliver what it called “truck-like” intermodal service and also provide consistent access to lightweight, quality chassis when and where shippers need them, which it said has been an ongoing issued in the intermodal sector.

In October, Schneider said it began providing service in the form of Mexico cross-border intermodal loads through Jackson, Miss.-based steel wheel interchange, with its intermodal Mexico Direct loads moving between Chicago and Jackson on the Canadian National Railway and then between Jackson and Mexico on the Kansas City Southern Railway.

Schneider National, the nation’s second-largest truckload carrier which traditionally has been a major player in long-haul intermodal traffic, recently announced it plans to add 200 truck drivers in Arizona and open a facility in Phoenix that will open next month.
