Rail carloads, at 253,293, were up 2.6% compared to the same week last year. Intermodal containers and trailers, at 248,915, increased 5.8% annually.

Carloads, at 1,386,026, increased 3.8%, or 50,335 carloads, compared to August 2017, and intermodal containers and trailers, at 1,442,920, headed up 5.1%, or 70,198 units, annually. AAR said that total U.S. carload and intermodal originations, at 2,828,946, were up 4.5%, or 120,533 carloads and intermodal units, annually.

Total second quarter intermodal volume movements, at 4,741,054, were up 6.2% annually. This also marks a 4% improvement over the first quarter’s 4,547,247, which, heading into this quarter had stood as the best quarter for intermodal in nearly four years, going back to the second quarter of 2014.

This was ahead of the 240,154 carloads for the week ending July 7, which was likely impacted by the July 4 holiday and ahead of the week ending June 30 at 270,916.

Rail carloads, at 240,514, were up 5.4% annually, which is below the week ending June 30 at 270,916 and the week ending June 23 at 268,464.
