The report’s third quarter shipment index value, at 106.6, was down 3.4% compared to the second quarter and was down 9.7% annually, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of annual shipment declines. On the spend side, the report observed that the third quarter reading, at 106.6, fell 9.7% annually and was down 3.4%, from the second quarter to the third quarter.

The report’s first quarter shipment index value—at 111.7—was down 0.8% compared to the fourth quarter and fell 6.1% annually, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of annual shipment declines. And the freight spend index value—at 269.9—was down 0.2% compared to the fourth quarter and was down 0.3% annually. The reading saw its first annual decline going back to the third quarter 2020.

The annual gain represented its lowest increase since the third quarter 2020.

The report’s second quarter shipment index value—at 121.6—was up 2.3% compared to the first quarter and essentially flat annually, down 0.9%. On the freight spend side, the index—at 279.6—was up 3.3% compared to the first quarter, while also posting a 19.7% annual gain.

Myriad signs of economic improvement—driven by things like more people getting vaccinated, strong retail sales, high imports, construction and manufacturing output—helped propel second quarter freight shipments and spend levels to high levels, according to the most recent edition of the U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index, which was recently released by Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank.

The sequential gain nearly erased the 13.7% spending decrease, from the first quarter to the second quarter.

The report’s first quarter National Shipment Index—at 124.3 (2011=110.1) dropped 1.8% compared to the fourth quarter and was up 3.8% annually. First quarter spend—at 188.1 (2011=110.1)—fell 3.7% compared to the fourth quarter, following a 4% sequential decline from the third quarter to the fourth quarter of 2019, and it was down 2.5% annually.

The report’s National Shipment Index, at 131.7 (2011=110.1), was up 0.3% from the second quarter to the third quarter, which was well off the 9.7% gain from the first quarter to the second quarter, and was down 0.1% annually. On the spending side, the report’s spending index, at 200.7, slipped 0.3% from the first quarter, the second sequential decline over the last three quarters, and rose 7.4% annually, topping the 6.4% annual gain from the first quarter to the second quarter.
