DHL announces Southern California expansion into new Redondo Beach facility

Global express delivery and logistics services provider DHL said this week it has moved its Carson, Calif.-based pickup and delivery operation to a new Redondo Beach, Calif.-based state-of-the art service center.

Company officials said that this new facility, which represents a $5 million investment, is 60% larger than the previous one, adding that it offers up myriad customer benefits, including increasing shipment capacity and faster shipment processing, which provide earlier deliveries for customers in the Long Beach and South Bay area.

The new facility is located at 4000 Redondo Beach Avenue, Redondo Beach, Calif. DHL said that through this facility it serves more than 50 Southern California cities and is in close proximity—less than four miles—from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), where the company operates international and domestic flights to and from its LAX gateway. What’s more, it is comprised of 40,000 square-feet of warehousing and office space, which includes new material handling equipment and doubling the positions available for up to 56 vehicles that load and unload freight around its conveyor system.

The facility, which is staffed by more than 80 employees, is able to process up to 3,775 pieces per hour, and can handle U.S. domestic and time-definite international shipments to and from the 225 countries and territories DHL Express serves. DHL also noted that its local package delivery growth has been paced by e-commerce shipping and other verticals, including banking, technology, fashion, and aerospace. And in advance of its introduction of fully electric pickup and delivery vehicles, the new facility has electric charging stations, which support DHL parent company Deutsche Post DHL Group’s sustainability objectives, focusing on having 60% of its global delivery fleet to be electrically powered by 2030.

“DHL is pleased to expand and improve its capabilities for international shippers within the nation’s largest export market, and continue to help customers—both large and small – capitalize on business growth opportunities beyond our borders,” said Aaron Gallagher, VP and General Manager of DHL Express, in a statement.

A DHL spokesman told LM that a key driver for this new facility is that it provides DHL with the increased space to grow with its international customers, and can manage significantly more shipment volumes.

“The facility is situated closer to the DHL Express Gateway at LAX airport, and as such, we receive many shipments sooner at the facility, resulting in earlier deliveries for many customers in Southern California,” he said. “It’s also in a much more convenient location for customers to pick up and drop off packages, and includes a larger parking area with an improved front counter area.”
