Convey survey takes long look at key holiday delivery challenges for retailers

Findings for the survey were based on feedback from 1,600 United States-based consumers. The wide-ranging survey is the fourth one Convey has released, going back to 2017, and its findings can be viewed, as it was conducted and released over the course of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which Convey said has created a whole new set of challenges for retailers to win customers and also meet seasonal demands amid a global pandemic.
FedEx reports very solid fiscal first quarter earnings numbers

Revenue—at $19.3 billion—was up 13% annually, and operating income—at $1.59 billion—headed up 63%. The company’s quarterly net income on an adjusted basis—at $1.25 billion—outpaced the $745 million recorded for the same quarter last year. Adjusted earnings per share—at $4.87—outpaced the $3.05 per share, from a year ago, and topped Wall Street expectations, of $2.54 per share.

LaserShip announces opening of new branch in Durham, North Carolina

The 40,000 square-foot facility, which is located at 3500 Tricenter Boulevard, is the first one for LaserShip in North Carolina’s triangle area, with the company noting that it can process up to 14,000 packages per hour. There are currently 15 full-time employees at the facility, and LaserShip said it intends to hire up to 22, in order to help meet local delivery demand.
Report: New USPS top exec DeJoy is focused on making changes to improve the bottom line

While it is no secret that the USPS’s bottom line has been, and remains, a major cause for concern, especially amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has seen a significant uptick, a recent article in The Washington Post made it clear that DeJoy clearly intends to make “major operational changes,” with the goal of making the USPS a profitable and better managed organization.

Nothing has been predictable or consistent in the parcel shipping industry in 2020. The onset of COVID-19 decimated shipping volumes in March and the beginning of April, as businesses sent employees home and shuttered facilities. However, parcel volumes have raged higher and higher ever since, with both FedEx and UPS reporting daily volumes at and exceeding “peak” holiday volumes.
Transplace announces strategic acquisition of ScanData Systems

Dallas-based Transplace, a non asset-based third-party logistics services provider, announced today that it is welcoming Austin, Texas-based ScanData Systems Inc., a provider of parcel transportation management solutions (PTMS), into the fold, in what it called a strategic acquisition. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
UPS rolls out new COVID-19-driven Peak Surcharges

Atlanta-based global transportation and logistics bellwether UPS announced this week that it plans to implement COVID-19-related Peak Surcharges. A UPS customer notice stated that these new surcharges will take effect on May 31, 2020.
Postal Service sees fiscal second quarter revenue gain and further net losses

Quarterly revenue—at $17.8 billion—headed up $348 million on an annual basis. But, despite the revenue gain, volume declined, falling 2.3% to 34,013 total pieces, and total operating expenses—at $22.3 billion—were up$2.8 billion, or 14.2%.
USPS Taps Logistics Veteran Louis DeJoy As Next Postmaster General

The United States Postal Service (USPS) announced that it has named Louis DeJoy as its 75th Postmaster General and CEO. DeJoy will be replacing Megan Brennan, whom has been serving in the position since 2015, and will take over on June 15. The incoming USPS chief will be the fifth Postmaster General to come over from the private sector, going back to when the USPS, in 1971, became an independent establishment within the Executive Branch.
Analyst weighs in on Amazon’s move to end its third-party delivery service

Trevor Outman, Founder and CEO of San Diego-based parcel consultancy Shipware LLC, told LM that as Amazon continues to invest in their own delivery network, they found a way to develop and monetize pockets of excess capacity, adding that Amazon Shipping was designed to capitalize on these pockets of excess capacity and deliver non-amazon platform orders.
Amazon preps to cease its third-party delivery service for non-Amazon packages in June

Citing a source, the report said that this program, which is only currently available in only a few United States markets, is being suspended, due to Amazon needing “people and capacity to handle a surge in its own customers’ orders,” adding that Amazon plans to bring on 100,000 warehouse workers and is intent on “shipping essential items during the coronavirus outbreak.”

3Gtms announces acquisition of Pacejet, expands service offerings on parcel side

Shelton, Conn.-based 3Gtms, said today it has acquired Pacejet, a Columbus, Ohio-based provider of enterprise, cloud-based multi-carrier shipping software. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
