As oil prices creep back over $4 a gallon, we look at the underlying reasons for this unexpected increase.

Diesel prices are back over $4 a gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) weekly, on-highway survey of prices at 73,000 service stations and 9,500 truck stops around the country. Average diesel prices rose by 6.5 cents, increasing to $4.06 per gallon as of Monday, April 8. The Western states of Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington saw the highest average price increase for the period, rising 11 cents to $4.26 per gallon.

With a 6.5-cent increase, the national average came in at $4.061 per gallon. This follows a 3.8-cent decline, to $3.996, for the week of April 1, and a slight 0.006-cent increase, to $4.034, for the week of March 25, and a 2.4-cent increase, to $4.028, for the week of March 18.

The national average, at $4.058, fell 5.1 cents from the matching $4.109 readings, for the weeks ending February 12 and February 19, respectively, marking the largest weekly decrease, to date, in 2024.

The national average, at $4.109 per gallon, rose 21.0 cents, compared to week of February 5. This tally marked the first week that the national average topped the $4 per gallon mark in 10 weeks, going back to the week of December 4, when it checked in at $4.092. And it also marks the largest weekly gain since the 22.2-cent gain, from $3.905 per gallon to $4.127 per gallon, from the week of July 24 to the week of July 31.

With a 3.2-cent increase, national average came in at $3.899 per gallon, following a 2.9-cent increase, to $3.867, for the week of January 29, and a 2.5-cent decrease, to $3.838, for the week of January 22.

With a 3.5-cent increase, the national diesel average came in at $3.863 per gallon. This came on the heels of a 4.8-cent decrease, to $3.828, for the week of January 8, and a 3.8-cent decrease, to $3.876, for the week of January 1. This marks the first weekly increase since the week of December 25.
