The ATA’s advanced Seasonally Adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index, for July, came in at 112.9 (2015=100), falling 0.8%, following a 0.3% June decline, which registered a 113.8 reading.

ATA found that the trucking industry moved 11.46 tons of freight in 2022, topping 2021's 10.93 million tons and 2020’s pandemic-driven 10.23 tons. What's more, trucking took in $940.8 billion, for all of 2022, representing 80.7% of the United States’ total freight bill. That percentage figure in in line with 2021's 80.7% tally, while 2021 revenue came in at $875.5 billion.

ATA has ‘grave concerns’ that EPA may allow California-type air quality rules on heavy trucks

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) expressed what it called its “grave concerns” about media reports that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may be on the verge of granting the state of California waivers to implement potentially harmful and unrealistic emissions rules on the industry. Under California rules, new Class 8 heavy truck models would be zero-emission next year. Diesel and gasoline-powered drayage trucks must retire after 18 years to guarantee that they meet a zero-emission requirement by 2035.

ATA also noted that calendar year 2022 tonnage rose 3.4%, marking the highest annual increase going back to 2018.
