Transitioning to Low-Carbon Fuel: A Business Guide for Sustainable Trucking in North America

Many truckers are committed to sustainability, and some have adopted measures that improve the sustainability of their fleets. However, even relative leaders have the opportunity to be more proactive about transitioning to low-carbon fuels.

BSR’s Future of Fuels initiative has produced a guide that outlines strategies for companies to accelerate the transition to climate-friendly fuels while improving the sustainability impacts of all fuels.

The guide helps fleet operators and their value chain partners—including energy producers, vehicle manufacturers, retailers that place shipments, and investors—develop impactful yet practical strategies that will accelerate the transition to low-carbon fuels, improve the sustainability impacts of all fuels, and advance dialogue and understanding about our shared challenges.

This guide outlines five challenges that have hindered efforts to adopt low-carbon fuel, and then offers a four-step approach to addressing these challenges. It is based on input from hundreds of practitioners and experts representing companies, research institutes, civil society organizations, and government agencies in stakeholder forums between 2012 and 2014.

Transportation fuel is projected to be one the leading sources of increases in greenhouse gas emissions through 2050. This guide aims to help companies be more ambitious and creative in transitioning to fuels that will reverse this trend, while developing new fuel systems that are cost-effective and resilient.
