Transplace to set up new operations in Calgary and Montreal

Non asset-based third-party logistics (3PL) services provider Transplace recently announced it has expanded its Canadian division operations, opening up new locations in Calgary and the Greater Montreal area.

Transplace’s new facility in Quebec is in close proximity to a distinct and unique transportation community of shippers and carriers and the Calgary office is near large shale oil reserves, which serves as a direct reflection of the company’s oil and gas expertise and services.

In December 2012, Transplace acquired Torus Freight Systems, a Richmond Hill, Ontario-based logistics services provider specializing in Canadian cross-border and intra-Canada freight. Torus was subsequently renamed as Transplace Canada.

“Acquiring Torus Freight Systems and its office in Richmond Hill, Ontario allowed Transplace to further expand its presence across North America and continue to specialize in Canadian cross-border and intra-Canada freight,” said Transplace President and CEO George Abernathy in an interview. “Expanding our Canadian operations to include offices in Calgary and the Greater Montreal area further supports Transplace’s commitment to growth and to provide outstanding transportation management and brokerage services to shippers doing business cross-border and throughout Canada.”

These new offices, noted Abernathy, will provide Transplace customers with transportation management and brokerage services and technology for all Canadian cross-border and intra-Canada shipments. And with the Calgary office being located in the heart of large shale oil reserves, he explained it presents a tremendous opportunity for Transplace to provide its oil and gas expertise and services to Canadian businesses in that market.

Transplace will be providing transportation management services, primarily as a broker initially, in the Montreal and Calgary offices, with dozens of customers serviced out of each location, and Abernathy said that both offices will initially have approximately 5 employees, but expect to grow rapidly in 2015.

As for how Transplace previously served shippers in Greater Montreal and Calgary, Abernathy said it used to serve shippers out of its Toronto office, but expanding its Canadian operations to include Greater Montreal and Calgary will allow it to better serve our existing customers as well as new customers, and continue to specialize in Canadian cross-border and intra-Canada freight.

“The unique opportunity in Quebec will be serviced with local bi-lingual resources who are very familiar with the needs of this Province, while Calgary resources will have domain expertise in the ever growing markets in that Province’s rapidly growing transportation needs,” he said.
