New Certification Program Designed for Logistics, Transportation and Distribution Professionals

APICS certified in logistics, transportation, and distribution designation program brings best practices and industry standards to logistics managers around the world.

APICS, the premier professional association for supply chain management, announced the launch of the APICS Certified in Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution (CLTD) credential program.

Developed in tandem with subject matter experts over the past nine months, the new certification will set the global standard for logistics best practices and aims to elevate knowledge and skills in logistics, transportation, and distribution practitioners.

The CLTD joins the respected APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) programs and furthers APICS’s position as the leading organization for end-to-end supply chain research, education, and certification.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics identifies transportation and logistics as the second largest employment sector in the United States, employing more than six million people.

According to the Georgia Center for Innovation, the field will generate 270,000 new jobs annually through at least 2018. At the current job creation rate, that is more than 10 percent of all new U.S. jobs in the next few years.

In addition, according to a PWC report, India’s transportation and logistics sector is expected to require 25 million employees by 2022, and the shortage of skilled employees in South Africa’s industry is already stifling overall economic growth.

“With this growth, the industry is struggling to find and train quality logistics, transportation, and distribution employees. As a result, there is a market need and demand for a certification based on a single, universal body of knowledge,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE.

“The APICS CLTD reflects the most important and current knowledge individuals need to pursue or advance a career in logistics, transportation and distribution”

The new APICS CLTD designation, which is earned by passing one comprehensive exam, focuses on eight modules covering critical areas in logistics, transportation, and distribution:

  • Logistics and Supply Chain Overview
  • Capacity Planning and Demand Management
  • Order Management
  • Inventory and Warehouse Management
  • Transportation Management
  • Global Logistics Considerations
  • Logistics Network Design
  • Reverse Logistics and Sustainability

The APICS CLTD designation will equip individuals with the essential knowledge they need to reduce costs, increase customer satisfaction, and achieve recognition as a logistics expert.

Continued Eshkenazi, “As with all APICS designations, the APICS CLTD aims to serve the needs of experienced professionals, as well as those new to the field, to lessen the impact of the industry skills gap. Much like the APICS CSCP and CPIM designations, the APICS CLTD will set the new global standard for logistics best practices.”
