Information Management: Mobile computers help automate inventory management

Safety equipment manufacturer reduces errors with step-by-step verification from production to delivery.

Autoliv, a leader in automobile safety systems, has relied on bar codes since 2005, when it standardized processes and tools for all European plants, implemented a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, and deployed a series of mobile devices. When it recently updated these mobile devices, the company further improved efficiency in production line and warehouse operations.

Today, more than 600 mobile computers support operators in the field, working to reduce the risk of errors during labeling operations and delivery handling, as well as automate inventory management. The supplier developed and certified a custom application and personalized the mobile computers’ operating system to fit Autoliv’s needs.

The mobile computers come into use at the end of the assembly line to register production, making sure that each product coming off the line is put in the correct box with the correct label. The devices scan the product labels to include them on the picking list of the order. The operator adds the materials to the pallet, a shipping label is printed and a mobile computer scans the printed label to make sure it corresponds to the products.

When each pallet is loaded onto the truck, the operator makes a final check with a mobile computer to confirm that the pallet will be shipped to the right destination.
