Datalogic system enables intelligent package ID

Datalogic (Booth S1034) demonstrated multiple products, including its Package Identification Tool.

Datalogic (Booth S1034) demonstrated multiple products, including its Package Identification Tool, a system that uses vision technology and software to properly identify packages that might need special handling or shipment routing because they fall under hazardous material rules.

The Package Identification Tool is based on Datalogic’s Impact Software and Machine Vision technology, explained Bradley Weber, GM of Datalogic’s machine vision business unit. The vision unit of the tool very rapidly reads hazmat warning graphics on packages while the software identifies the goods so they are handled, routed and shipped correctly. Such goods might include hazardous or flammable items, or products containing lithium ion batteries. “The tool quickly identifies the goods, based on a warning graphic or image, so that the goods can be routed and handled appropriately,” says Weber.

Being able to automatically determine how products should be routed, shipped and handled can help avoid fines, says Weber. The tool’s software also has “cross checking” logic that reads bar code data and checks to see if the product has a proper warning label, which if missing can also lead to fines. Weber will be discussing these identification concepts at a Wednesday session that begins at 3 p.m. in room N230a, titled, “A New Method for Intelligent Package Identification and Location.”

Datalogic also has some of its mobile computing and data capture products on display, including the PowerScan 9300 laser scanner models, which offer laser technology for extra long-range applications.
