AAR reports mixed volumes for week ending September 19


The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported this week that rail carload and intermodal volumes for the week ending September 19 were mixed.

Carloads dropped 5.5 percent annually to 285,320, which was ahead of the week ending September 12 at 268,960 and below the week ending September 5 at 287,339.

The AAR said that four of the ten carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains for the week ending September 19, with grain up 19 percent to 22,977 carloads and miscellaneous carloads up 7.7 percent to 9,061. Metallic ores and metals fell 22.9 percent to 22,044 carloads.

Intermodal containers and trailers were up 0.6 percent to 281,414, which topped the week ending September 12 at 241,837 and the week ending September 5 at 279,867.

Through the first 37 weeks of 2015, AAR said that U.S. carloads are down 4.4 percent annually at 10,304,555, and intermodal units are up 2.5 percent at 9,854,405.
